King Gustav II of  Sweden founded the Royal Opera of Sweden, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, during his reign from 1772 to 1792.

Swedish music flourished in the romantic period, with composer Franz Berwald (1796 - 1868) of especial note. Overlapping the romantic and modern periods, Hugo Alfven (1872 -1960) wrote Midsummer Vigil, employing some Swedish folk-melody.
