The guitar is a stringed instrument with inwardly curved sides, a flat back, and a narrow neck with raised bars or frets spaced along it. It has 6 strings which are plucked either with a plectrum, or with the fingers.

The player usually plucks the strings with his right hand, whilst stopping the strings against the frets with the fingers of his left hand.

The strings are tuned to E A D G B E, starting from the E one octave below the E below middle C.
