McCartney was born in Liverpool,
England in 1942. He is a song-writer,
pop-singer and guitarist. He
started his career as a member of the
'Beatles', the world's best-known
pop and rock group of the 20th century.
The group's first hit was 'Love me Do',
in 1963. The 'Beatles' went on producing
top-of-the-charts hits in USA, Britain
and around the world until the group
broke up in 1971. Since then McCartney
has persued his career as a solo artist
and composer. In 1991 he composed (in
collaboration with Carl Davis) a
classical work 'Liverpool Oratorio',
which received its premiere in Liverpool
Cathedral, performed by the Liverpool
Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus,
conducted by Carl Davis. McCartney was knighted in 1997.
