Rachmaninov Return to List of Composers
Sergei Rachmaninov was born in Russia in 1873. This composer belonged to the Romantic period, and died in 1943. Rachmaninov

Rachmaninov lived more than half of his life in the 20th century, but his style was definitely romantic. He said of himself  "I cannot cast out the old way of writing and I cannot acquire the new".  The world is the more fortunate for this, as Rachmaninov's music is amongst the finest romantic music ever written.

He was born in Russia in 1873, studied in St Petersburg and Moscow, and wrote 4 piano concertos, of which the second in C minor is the most well-loved. He also wrote 24 preludes for piano, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and 3 symphonies. In 1917 the Russian revolution forced him to flee to Sweden, then to USA, where he stayed the rest of his life. He died in Beverly Hills, in 1943.
