Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) was an Italian Romantic composer from Bergamo in Lombardy.
He wrote 70 operas, of which 51 were presented in Naples after he moved to that city in 1822. He wrote in the bel canto style, like Rossini. He moved to Paris in 1838 and started writing operas set to French libretti. His most famous operas include L'elisir d'amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, and La fille du Regiment
