Johann Paul Martini (1741-1816) was born in Freystadt near Nurenberg in Germany. He studied music at Fribourg, then at the age of 25 he emigrated to Paris, France, where he was employed by the aristocracy. He obviously managed to switch allegiance at the time of the revolution because he took the post of instructor at the Paris Consevatoire. When the Bourbon Kings came back after the revolutionary period, he went back to work for them.
He wrote chamber and symphonic music, and some church music and opera. However, today he is effectively a one-hit wonder with his song "Plaisir d'Amour'.
