Helsinki (Helsingfors) is the capital of Finland, whose area is 338,145 square kilometres, and its population is 5,154,000 people.

Finland was a Swedish province until 1809 when it became a Duchy of Tsarist Russia. It became independent in 1917. Musical life in earlier centuries was dominated by the Swedish culture and concentrated in Stockholm.

Sibelius (1865 - 1957) composed in the romantic tradition at first, then experimented with different styles in his later years. He totally dominated Finnish musical life, and was feted internationally during his lifetime.
