a Swedish province until 1809 when it became a Duchy of Tsarist Russia. It
became independent in 1917. Musical life in earlier centuries was dominated by
the Swedish culture and concentrated in Stockholm.
Sibelius (1865 - 1957)
composed in the romantic tradition at first, then experimented with different
styles in his later years. He totally dominated Finnish musical life, and was
feted internationally during his lifetime.
