Jesu Joy of Man's desiring Bach Help Opus Details

Bach's cantata no 147 is called Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben  = Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life.   The piece is written for trumpet, two oboes, bassoon, two violins, viola, basso continuo, and a standard four-part choir of soprano, alto, tenor, and basso. It is in ten movements. This extract comes from the 10th movement.  The first theme is the well known triplet figure, here played by the oboes. At bar 9 the slow chorale theme appears, here played on the trumpet. This chorale theme was not actually written by Bach, but by violinist and composer Johann Schop. The modern popularity of this music (especially at weddings) dates back to 1926 when a piano arrangement of the chorale theme was published by pianist Myra Hess (1890-1965), and set by her to words by Robert Bridges. These words are based on the words of the chorale, but with fairly liberal poetic licence.  The German Jesus bleibet meine Freude, actually means Jesus shall remain my gladness.

Jesus bleibet meine Freude, Jesu, joy of man's desiring,
meines Herzens Trost und Saft, Holy Wisdom, Love most bright;
Jesus wehret allem Leide, Drawn by Thee, our souls, aspiring,
er ist meines Lebens Kraft, Soar to uncreated light.
meiner Augen Lust und Sonne, Word of God, our flesh that fashion'd,
meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne; With the fire of life impassion'd,
darum lass' ich Jesum nicht Striving still to truth unknown,
aus dem Herzen und Gesicht Soaring, dying, round Thy throne.
