Music for wind instruments was very popular at the time, so up to the end of the century, Beethoven composed many works with numerous elements of novelty in the field. Replacing the violin with a clarinet, as in this trio for piano, clarinet and cello, greatly alters the balance of sonorities, but offers new contrasts. Beethoven's piano trio opus 11 has 3 movements, the fast is an energetic allegro, the 2nd an adagio, but so full of hemi--demi-semi-quavers that the printer must have used up heaps of black ink! This 3rd movement is a charming theme and variations. The theme on which this set of variations is based is called Pria ch'io l'impegno..
