|
The famous violinist, Paganini, asked Berlioz to write a viola concerto for him to play. Berlioz wrote Harold in Italy more in the style of a symphony with some viola solos thrown in, and Paganini at first refused to play it, as it did not display his virtuosity sufficiently. However, having heard it performed by others in later years, Paganini begged Berlioz's forgiveness, and paid him 20,00 francs!
As in his "Symphonie Fantastique", Berlioz uses an "idée fixe", appearing in each movement, but with more thematic development.
