Symphonie Fantastique Op 14 3rd movement Scène aux champs Berlioz Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
This 3rd movement of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is entitled Scène aux champs (Scene in the countryside). It opens with the cor anglais making a shepherds call from the right of the orchestral stage, answered by the oboe from the left. A dialogue continues, and then a quiet country scene is painted by the violins, a little reminiscent of the 2nd movement of Beethoven's Pastoral symphony. In fact, Berlioz was probably greatly influenced by Beethoven's 6th; both have 5 movements, both have programme notes written by the composer, although Beethoven's were ony a few words per movement, whereas Berlioz's are quite lengthy!

Berlioz's own programme description is as follows:- One summer evening in the countryside he hears two shepherds calling each other, this is a "Ranz des vaches". This pastoral duet, this place, the rustling of the trees in the gentle wind, give some cause for hope, and conspire to restore to his heart an unaccustomed feeling of calm and to give to his thoughts a happier colouring. But she appears again, he feels a pang of anguish, and painful thoughts disturb him. What if she betrayed him? One of the shepherds resumes his simple melody, the other one no longer answers. The sun sets... distant sound of thunder... solitude... silence...
