Symphonie Fantastique Op 14 4th movement - March to the Scaffold Berlioz Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
This 4th movement of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is entitled March to the Scaffold It opens very dramatically with timpani, pizzicato double basses and grunts by horns and bassoons. This is more the stuff of Stravinsky than that written 3 years after Beethoven's death! Later the procession starts with a descending scale by cellos and basses. The 2nd theme is a glorious triumphant march scored with blazing brass and woodwind. Berlioz in his fervid imagination, perhaps saw himself as a hero rather than a victim or indeed, a killer!

Berlioz's own programme notes read: He dreams that he has killed his beloved, that he is condemned to death and led to execution. The procession advances to the sound of a march that is sometimes sombre and wild, and sometimes brilliant and solemn, in which a dull sound of heavy footsteps follows the loudest outbursts. At the end, the idée fixe reappears for a moment like a final thought of love, then interrupted by the fatal blow.
