Bizet wrote incidental music for a play, which was about a man who loved a girl from Arles. The play failed, but the music is delightful, and Bizet created this concert suite of four tunes from the incidental music. The suite has been very successful.
A minuet is a stately dance in 3/4 time, popular between 1550 and 1800. It was widely adopted by baroque composers as a component of their suites, and by classical composers as middle movemnts in sonatas, symphonies and string quartets. It is usually in binary form, with all sections in multiples of 4 bars. Minuet becomes menuetto in Italian, and Menuet in French.
