Symphony No.4 in E minor Op 98 2nd movement Brahms Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
With his Symphony No.4 Brahms reached the culmination of his symphonic style. The outer movements alone are virtually symphonies. The defiant opening movement is packed with truly epic and gripping melodic ideas, while the equally momentous finale, a passacaglia with thirty individual variations on its ground-bass theme, has the same air of finality as the conclusion of Beethoven's ninth.

This, the last of his symphonies, was begun in the summer of 1884 while the composer was vacationing in the Styrian town of Mürzzuschlag. Although Brahms often spent years slaving over the manuscripts of his larger works, this new symphony progressed rather quickly, and was completed during the following summer's holiday. Brahms himself conducted the work's premiere on 25th October 1885, in Meiningen, home of one of Germany's finest orchestras.

In Vienna, this symphony was included in a concert on 7th May, 1897: Brahms' sixty-fourth birthday. The composer was there, but he did not conduct, for he was already fatally ill with liver cancer. But he saw and heard the magnificent ovation at the concert's conclusion, and managed to emerge from his theatre box long enough to acknowledge the audience's appreciation. Within a month, Brahms had died.
