Sorcerer's Apprentice ( L'Apprenti Sorcier) Dukas Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
This magical tone poem by Dukas was picked by Walt Disney to feature in his cartoon "Fantasia". The film depicts Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer's apprentice, with all his magic spells going wrong, as the broom and bucket won't stop, and he floods the room. All is saved only when the magician himself arrives back, and casts a spell to quell the rebel buckets. The music has dramatic crescendos and climaxes which vividly depict these scenes. The comic tune played by the bassoon really captures the fun, as the apprentice is so pleased with himself when his spells seem to work well at first.
