Symphony No.8 in G Op 88 1st movement Dvořák Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Dvorak wrote his jolly and cheerful 8th symphony in G Op 88 in 1889. In older catalogues it was numbered Symphony No 4.

The first theme is somewhat sombre, introduced by the cellos with the French horns and clarinets. It is a lovely, idyllic tune, which turns out to be less important than the much more energetic second subject. This is a chirpy birdsong tune on the flutes and picolo which quickly dispells any solemnity, and proceeds to dominate the whole movement. The 3rd theme, on cellos and violas, returns briefly to the idyllic mood of the 1st theme. The 4th theme, in B minor, is a relaxed swinging tune for clarinets and winds over flowing triplets in the strings. At the end of the exposition, Dvorak repeats the 1st theme (Cellos, clarinets and horns), just as though he were about to repeat the exposition, but instead, this turns out to be the start of the development. This extract ends at this point.
