Nocturne No.4 in A Field Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Irish composer John Field's claim to fame is that he invented the Romantic type of piano piece called the "nocturne". Field (1782-1837), who was a student of Clementi, and who lived in Moscow for thirty years, is otherwise forgotten. However, the classic model of the nocturne, with its simple, atmospheric and emotive melody and harmonic accompaniment, is not, becoming famous in the hands of Chopin and Fauré. No. 4 in A major is the finest of Field's nocturnes. It has both variety and exceptional emotional range.
