Handel composed his Fireworks music in 1749, in response to a request from King George II. The treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen) of 1748 ended the War of the Austrian Succession. A congress assembled at the Imperial Free City of Aachen, in the west of the Holy Roman Empire, on April 24, 1748. The resulting treaty was signed on October 18, 1748. Although many European nations were involved, France and Austria/Prussia were the main combatants. France and Britain mostly negotiated the treaty. King George wanted a big celebration to mark the peace, so he set up a huge fireworks display in Green Park, near Buckingham Palace, and engaged Handel to write the music.
The Fireworks Music is a suite of many dance-type movements, of which this Bourrée is one.. It is interesting that having composed a great suite for an outdoor celebration for King George I, namely 'The Water Music', Handel later composed this suite for King George II.
