After unsuccessful attempts at dances, marches, songs and an opera, Lehár achieved his first major succes with this Gold und Silver (Gold and Silver) waltz. It was composed for Princess Metternich's "Gold and Silver" Ball, in January 1902 and was well-received in Vienna. After this, Lehár moved rapidly onto fame and fortune with his operetta The Merry Widdow.
This is an arrangement made by me from the piano score, so any resemblence to Lehár's own orchestration is purely coincidental, but I hope the result is still enjoyable. It is a marvelous lilting set of waltz tunes, rivalling anything written by the waltz king Strauss himself.
