Vilja - from The Merry Widow Lehár Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Franz Lehár became a millionaire within 2 years of the first performance of this operetta Die Lustige Witwe   (The Merry Widow), which he wrote in 1905. It ran for 778 shows in London, where King Edward VII saw it 4 times. In New York they sold hats, drinks and cigarettes named after the operetta. Surely this must be the first known instance of our modern brand merchandizing phenomenon?
