Symphony No.4 in A Op 90 - Italian - 1st movement Mendelssohn Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Mendelssohn wrote his 4th symphony in Berlin in 1832, just after returning from a lovely holiday in Italy. It doesn't actually contain any Italian folk tunes, but its lively warm melodies capture the pleasures Mendelssohn found in Italian art, people and scenery.

The opening happy skipping tune is in 6/8 time, played by the violins. This is followed by the 2nd theme emerging on clarinets and bassoons, continuing the mood of Italian-style gaiety.
