Dance of the Hours, from La Gioconda Ponchielli Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
This ballet passage from Ponchielli's opera "La Gioconda" comes from Act 3 Scene 2. The ballet features the hours of dawn, day, twilight, and night. This extract contains the most famous part of the ballet score. The delicate introduction represents the hours of dawn. A chromatic crescendo reaches fortissimo, with the help of about three bars of chords for the harp, and a long sustained note for the trumpets, trombones and tuba. This is the only note played by these brass instruments in the entire passage!

The next tune, representing the hours of day, is the most well-known theme from this work. It features in popular culture in Disney's film "Fantasia" and in a popular song "Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda". The passage closes with a brief minor key passage, and a reprise of this main theme, as the hours of the day leave the stage.
