Impromptu No.2 in Ab Op.142 Schubert Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Schubert wrote 2 sets of 4 Impromptus in his last year, 1828. The style here has been clearly labelled as Romantic, as these miniatures get very close to Chopin in style. This is so despite the fact that Schubert is usually labelled as a Classical composer, although in reality his output crosses the divide between these two styles. The latin word Impromptu means not ready, and they are so spontaneous, changing quickly in mood so unpredictably, that they almost seem like improvisations, but this impression is belied by the consumate skill with which they have been composed.

This one, no 2 in Ab, is possibly the most well known of all his impromptus.
