The Laughing Song, from Die Fledermaus. Strauss-Johann2 Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
The Laughing Song "Mein Herr Marquis" is from Johann Strauss's operetta "Die Fledermaus" ("The Bat"). The opera was first performed in Vienna in 1874. The plot centres around revenge for a practical joke, when Eisenstein was drunk in a bat coustume, hence the title. , As usual in operatic stories, amorous escapades, marital infidelity, masked balls and intrigues are the main ingredients. At the ball, Eisenstein's maid, Adele, is pretending to be an actress whilst he is dressed as a Marquis. She sings this laughing song to him.

---------------------------------- Main theme ------------------------------- A man like you, a Marquis too, you really should beware.
I should advise you to scrutinize new faces with more care!
And surely my hand is too neat, Ah------
Anf surely I've such tiny feet, Ah------------
My speech shows such taste - How dainty my waist,
for charms like these you look in vain in maid or cook;
------------------------------------ the laughing theme ----------------
Yes this curious ha, ha, ha, situation ha, ha, ha
What a startling ha, ha, ha, revelation ha, ha, ha
