Tit-Willow from The Mikado Sullivan Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta "the Mikado" is a ludicrously frivolous 19th century parody of imagined Japanese life in earlier centuries. The leading male character is Nanki-Poo (does this remind you of a smelly handkerchief?). Tit-Willow 'On a tree by a river a little tomtit sang Willow' is a sort of serenade sung by the Lord High Executioner (Ko-Ko) to woo the (ugly) maid Katisha, after Nanki-Poo wins Yum-Yum as his bride, thereby depriving Katisha of her preferred (but unwilling) bridegroom, Nanki.
