Spem in Alium - Motet in 40 parts Tallis Help Opus Details
For feedback and questions, please contact Victor Gomersall.
This is Tallis's masterpiece, a motet for 5 choirs, each of 8 parts, in other words, in the tutti there are 40 polyphonic voice parts. It may have been written to celebrate the 40th birthday of Queen Elizabeth I, who still liked Latin liturgy despite the fact that she was a protestant.
Spem in alium numquam habui praeter in te I have never put my hope in any other but in you,
Deus Israel O God of Israel
qui irasceris who can show both anger
et propitius eris and graciousness,
et omnia peccata hominum in tribulatione dimittis and who absolves all the sins of suffering man
Domine Deus Lord God,
Creator coeli et terrae Creator of Heaven and Earth
respice humilitatem nostram be mindful of our humiliation
