Mozart composed this clarinet quintet in Vienna in 1789 for his friend, the clarinettist Stadler. It is a masterpiece, making full use of the clarinet's tone and blending capabilities, in low and high registers. It also gave Stadler an opportunity to show off his virtuoso skills. And it contains a wealth of fabulous tunes! No wonder it is amongst the all-time classical top favourites!
The first theme is introduced by the strings in the first seven bars, followed by a burst of arpeggios on the clarinet, and this pattern persist for a while. Then the second theme appears in the dominant key, E major, on the fist violin, followed soon by the clarinet. The third theme, and last of the exposition section, is shared between first violin and clarinet.
