With the eighteenth century coming to an end and the nineteenth about to begin, Ludwig van Beethoven, at the age of twenty-nine, was looking forward to the first performance of his First Symphony. After much preparation, this took place on 2nd April 1800 in Vienna's Burgtheater at a concert during which Beethoven also played one of his concertos, improvised at the piano and introduced his new Septet to the Viennese public. The rest of the programme comprised a Mozart Symphony and two excerpts from Haydn's oratorio The Creation. According to one newspaper report, the orchestra on this occasion left a lot to be desired, the woodwind department coming in for the most criticism, but, nonetheless, the new Symphony itself was praised for its inventiveness and abundance of musical ideas. Three years later almost to the day 5th April 1803 - this Symphony was heard again in Vienna in the Theater an der Wien, The even longer rehearsal was chaotic and had to be rescued by Prince Lichnovsky, who sent out for baskets full of bread and butter, cold meat and wine to pacify the irritated and exhausted musicians. The orchestra Beethoven used for this symphony was the same as that employed by Haydn in the last few of his, namely two each of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns and trumpets, timpani and the usual complement of strings. Also following Haydn's example, Beethoven began the first movement of this work with a slow introduction. He also observed tradition by calling the third movement a Menuetto even though he was already beginning to transform that antiquated dance into the rather faster Scherzo.
