This music was once attributed to the Prince of Wales (later George IV). The subject was said to be Mrs. Fitzherbert, who was a celebrated beauty. However, this is not true, the music is by James Hood, and the words celebrates a young lady who lived in Richmond, Yorkshire, who became the wife of the poet Leonard McNally.
On Richmond Hill there lived a lass, more bright than May day morn
All other girls her charms surpassed, a rose without a thorn.
This lass so neat, with smiles so sweet, has won my right good will
I'd crowns resign to call her mine, this lass from Richmond Hill.
Sweet lass from Richmond Hill, Sweet lass from Richmond Hill,
I'd crowns resign to call her mine sweet lass from Richmond Hill.
