George Gershwin was immensly succesful with his hit musicals and popular songs in the 1920s. But he wanted to write works on a larger scale, for symphony orchestra. "An American in Paris" is one such work, written in 1928. It is half 'jazzy', half classical. Gershwin himself wrote this about it:- "My purpose here is to portray the impressions of an American visitor in Paris, as he strolls about the city, listens to the various street noises, and absorbs the French atmosphere". Gershin does actually employ some French car horns in the orchestral score.
A film starring Gene Kelly was made in 1951, inspired by this music, and using it liberally in the film soundtrack.
