Claude Achile Debussy, was born in Paris France in 1862, and died there in1918. He is the creator of musical impressionism.
The main stream of music prior to Debussy was dominated by German and Austrian composers. He changed all that by moving in a different direction from their purely romantic style. He lived in Paris when it was fast becoming the new hub of European culture. In 1890 he lived in an apartment in Monmartre, surrounded by other artists, writers and composers.
Famous orchestral works include tone poems La Mer and L'apres midi d'un faune. , He wrote the opera Pelleas & Melisande, and many piano pieces such as Clair de Lune and The Sunken Cathedral. He also wrote some song settings.
