Mozart wrote Ave Verum Corpus in 1791, just six month before he died, whilst in the midst of writing his opera The Magic Flute. It was composed to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi . It is only forty-six bars long and is scored for choir, strings, and organ.
Ave verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine Hail the true body, born of the Virgin Mary,
vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine, Truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for mankind,
cuius latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine Whose pierced side flowed with water and blood,
esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine Let it be for us, in consideration, a foretaste of death.
