Frère Jacques is French for 'Brother Jack' and refers to a Brother in a monastery. This French Folk Song is really a Nursery Rhyme, and it is also a round, so if fours singers start singing the tune in a staggered fashion for each of the four lines, the resultant whole is in sweet harmony.
This arrangement by Victor Gomersall employs a wind quartet. The French words are:-
Frère Jacques Frère Jacques
Dormez vous? Dormez vous?
Sonnez les mattines Sonnez les mattines
Din dan don Din dan don
The English translation is:-
Brother Jack, Brother Jack
Are you sleeping, are you sleeping?
Ring the morning bells, ring the morning bells!
Ding Ding Dong, Ding Ding Dong.
