During his earlier period in Vienna, Mozart enjoyed success promoting his own concerts, and performing his own works. However, by 1786, this success was diminishing, and Mozart was writing a great deal of chamber music, on commission, for a great variety of clients, including Prince von Furstenburg and others.
This lovely piano trio for piano, violin and cello, is a work written during this period.
The main cheerful theme is stated immediately by the piano, and this forms the thematic basis for development throughout the 1st movement.
