Bolero is probably Ravel's most well-known composition, but Ravel himself was saddened by this. As he said himself "Bolero is orchestration without music".
It consists of a phrase in C major, endlessly repeated, accompanied by an equally endless and repetiitve rhythmic pattern on the snare drum. Theme 1 comes firstly on the flute, then it is picked up by the clarinet, and so on as the crescendo gathers steam. The 2nd theme is really just a minor variation on theme 1, but it first emerges on a saxophone, which is a novelty for a symphony orchestra. As the 2 themes are repeated, the orchestation adds more and more instruments and volume, until 15 minutes later, it reaches its climax.
I have known this work to be used as an example of team work under the leadership of a conductor, during a management course. But I feel this would in fact be easily played by a competent orchestra without any conductor, using the snare-drummer to keep the tempo, just like a rock band!
