Finlandia was written by Sibelius to stimulate patriotism and a sense of national identity among the Finnish people, in the face of oppression by Tsarist Russia. It was first performed in Helsinki in 1899 as a charity event, to accompany a series of tableaux depicting Finnish history. This was so successful that the Russian authorities even banned people from singing Finlandia tunes in the street!
Theme 2 is a hymn-like tune, and is still original Sibelius, not a folk tune as often mistakenly asserted. It was later reworked by Sibelius into a stand-alone hymn, and when, later, words were added in 1941 by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi, it became one of the most important national songs of Finland.
With different words, the same tune is used as a hymn in English-speaking churches - "Be Still, My Soul".
